Fluency:
Fluency is the combination of being able to identify letters, sounds, words quickly, accurately, and automatically. A child needs to be able to comprehend, add add appropriate intonation a tempo to be a fluent reader.
Printed word awareness:
Printed word awareness is when a child is able to identify words on a page. Some words such as sight words are memorized, white other words students need to understand how to place phonetic sounds together.
Phonemic awareness relates to learning to read alphabetic systems. When learning to read a child needs to go through three processes, the first is synthesis, or putting letters together to make words. The second is analysis, taking letters and sounds apart. The third and last step is identity, or the relation of words.
What can you do at home?
- Read out loud to your child!When your child hears you and others in your household read, they are hearing how you articulate words, the rhythm on your voice, and the speed when you are reading.
- Read different types of books with your child.
- Allow your child to experience with different writing instruments, such as paint, shaving cream, play-doh, special markers or colored pencils.
- Have your child help you make lists, shopping lists, grocergy lists, or to-do lists.
- Place labels around your house, when your child is ready allow your child to make labels for the house.
- Read the same book more then once! Your child will become familiar with the story and the words, and eventually will be able to read the story back to you!
